I have the thought that there are few places on earth I need to visit no matter how. And Universal Studios Singapore is certainly one of them.
Performances and schedule
The excitement of visiting Universal Studios Singapore begins even before you enter. The iconic globe is a centre of attraction. Do not fight for space to take your picture, the area behind the globe is just as good.
Be terrified and very terrified when you see the big crowd there. Look, it’s not even 10am, still some minutes away before the gates is opened.
The most time consuming activity is queuing for the ride, go at the wrong time and you could be spending 1-2 hour queuing for a mere 1 minute thrill.
We found out that the best way to join the queue is when there is a major performance going on, the show would draw the crowd away and keep the queue short, only drawback is you would miss the show.
I came here thrice (from 2013-2016), the first was on a weekend, queue on all rides took an average of 40 minutes.
On my second and third trip, I came on a weekday…… it’s not a school holiday, it’s also not a public holiday, I slotted onto all rides I wanted to take almost as soon as I get there. No Queues!
Another way is to upgrade your ticket to the Universal Express, that allows visitors to go to a special queue, priority to play the ride is given to all Universal Express ticket holders. It’s important to get this ticket for all weekend/school holiday trip.
Do note that the locals love to visit USS during weekend and school holidays. So try to avoid these period. During weekdays, I could see that most visitors are tourists.
The show at Waterworld is a performance no one should missed, I ranked it as the best show among all in Universal Studios Singapore. I’ve seen it more than 7 times, still I find it just as thrilling as the first time I have watched it.
This live performance by many stuntmen is utterly exciting. See the speed boat racing, hear the thundering bomb explosions, and the many breath-taking jumps of the stuntmen. Oh I see, so that’s how they make a movie.
My advise is do not seat on the first few rows nearest to the stage. The speedboat would get you wet when it races pass.
But beware that some of the shows might be cancelled for whatsoever reasons. Check it out before arrival.
Universal Studios Singapore is categorized into many different themes, this is the Ancient Egypt theme.
Thought the Jurrasic Park is going to be as exciting as the movie, perhaps too affected by the on-screen movie, in the end it was just a boat ride.
It’s quite fun being pictured with the dinosaurs though.
The Most Thrilling Ride
The best ride we took was the Transformer. The visual and audio effects was extraordinary, it really got us screaming all the way. The sudden ascends and descends in the ride gave one the illusion that you are one of the robots combating to save the earth. Exciting, right? This is the only ride we attempted 3 times and didn’t mind to queue an hour for it. For the next 2 trips I came again, I ride another 10 times!
There are theatres too, the one we went twice in every visit we came is the 4D show, experiencing water shooting, wind breezing and rocking chair, feeling like you are in the show itself. A very unforgetable experience!
Of course there are more thrilling one at Sci-Fi city, where the crowd is. Be adventurous, go hang yourself in mid-air and round and round with 360 degree turns.
The Rockafellas performance is just as entertaining! They invites audience participation too.
Many of your childhood dream characters would just suddenly appears right in front of you to give you an experience you never will forget. That’s the beauty of street entertainment!
It was already 7pm, and Elmo is still out there playing.
Shrek has at a house you probably never seen before.
The Worst Ride Ever
Not all rides are worth the long period of queuing. Some rides looks to be exciting, but when on it, it’s a big let down, especially those boat rides, perhaps they are meant for the kids, but even my kids complaint that it is so boring, a total waste of time in queuing for it, shouldn’t even attempt one. Many who had attempted walkout in disgust.
The Sudden Thrill
This boat ride at Jurassic Park looks ordinary and boring, you get to see some dinosaurs and uninteresting ruined buildings.
But it’s excitement came when the boat suddenly plunges …20 meters( I guessed)… down onto a river, that’s the only time you’d screamed it out!
We are warned that the boat ride at Jurassic Park would get one wet and soaked, so like many others, we purchased raincoats. It’s true we got ourselves wet, but to be soaked is an exaggeration. The rain coat is available at the kiosk, there are even drying booth.
If you had gotten yourself wet, a $5 fo about 5 minutes of blowing time at the drying pod would probably get everything dry again.
Food here are rather expensive, a simple quick meal for 4 easily set us back by almost S$100.00, the restaurant is so small and so congested that getting a seat is extremely hard, it’s worst then waiting for the ride. Mind you, the food tasted so ordinary that we didn’t even bother to finish it.
That’s the chicken rice we took. If you are crazing for the famous chicken rice of Singapore, this is certainly not the one you want to try. It’s costly and distasteful ! It tasted so ordinary that we didn’t even bother to finish it.
There are few foodcourt around USS. This is the one outside Jurrasic Park.
I suggest you take a temporarily exit from USS and try any food stalls just outside it’s entrance, it tastes better and has more variety of food.
Starbucks is available at the entrance area.
Water cooler is available free just outside the many restrooms around.
Plenty of souvenirs to buy, no visitors should leave here without a souvenir, it’s just that irresistible.
Just right at the entrance of USS, there are many services provided by USS to make your day better.
Go Into the Guest Services to convert your ticket into a Season Pass if you intend to come again soon.
Go get yourself a map and know the many shows available to plan your itinerary better.
For those with kids and babies, large room are there to help. It’s inside the Guest Services.
Wheelchairs and Strollers are there for rent.
Tired of carrying too many bags and belongings around? Just rent a locker and deposit them there.
Locker rental is $12 for 4 hours and $15 for a day for a small locker ( good for 2 bags). For a larger locker, the charges are $24 for 4 hours and $30 a day.
Where to get cheaper price ticket for USS?
Admission ticket to USS is officially priced at $74 for an adult and $54 for children.
- To get in at a cheaper rate, the fastest way is to use a Master Card if you had one, that would save you 10% for every ticket instantly.
- Or you could go buy the ticket online. There are many available, I would not named them here. Most are offering between SGD$55-$65. However, I don’t feel good when what they offer are actually ‘E-ticket’, or print-out ticket, not the actual admission ticket. I’m sceptical of its reliability since I’ve yet to buy any from it.
- We got ours from a travel agency in Chinatown People’s Park basement 1. Available at SGD$60 for a physical admission ticket. You can find plenty of travel agencies retailing them in Chinatown. ( Do remember to ask for a print-out receipt). Upon admission to Universal Studios Singapore, we went to the Guest Services to get it upgraded to a Season Pass ( valid for 6 months) by topping-up $24.
