We do listen to his songs, though we’re not an ardent Jay Chou’s fan, but since we’re in Taiwan, we thought why not visit Jay Chou Restaurant in Taipei, a themed restaurant said to be jointly owned by him.
Having watched too much of Voice Of China and The Brain China with Jay Chou ( 周杰伦 ) strongly featured in the variety show, we became more familiar with this superstar. We were at Zhong Xiao Fu Xing shopping then, since it was raining, we decided to go to Jay Chou Restaurant ( 周杰伦餐厅 )as it’s not far away. As we did not do any homework on where the location actually is, we took a cab there.
Upon knowing the destination is Jay Chou Restaurant, the taxi captain instantly knows where to go. A 15 minutes journey which costs TWD$145 or USD$4.30 brought us directly to the main gate.
Looking at the surrounding, we thought we were brought to the wrong place, oh no, it’s a medical school, and part of it is a hospital. But when we asked a few students, then did we realized that we were only steps away from the superstar’s restaurant!
So the restaurant is actually located in a medical school, there is even a convocation ceremony going on when we arrived.
Look at the yellow coloured arrow of the above picture, that’s Mr.J French-Italian Restaurant!
The theme of the restaurant was centred around a movie, Secret (不能說的秘密), a Taiwanese movie directed by Jay Chou himself in 2007, as can be seen from the many movie posters around.
The film had won him many nominations in many major Film Awards and was even named as the Best Asian Film in 2008. Now that’s strong reason for you to go watch the movie and come to this restaurant.
Fans left their admiration of the superstar on the heart-shaped card.
Then there is the legendary grand piano featured in the movie itself. It was this piano that brought the characters in the movie together, in brief, the piano is a Time Machine!
Oh yes, nice to see and nice to touch…… but there is a warning sign there……….play the piano and you could be transported 20 years back!
The setting of the restaurant is good, it looks grand unlike many other theme restaurants which either has excessive posters around or has dimmed lightings, and most are rather noisy.
When we arrived, a large group of students had just left, now there were only few tables occupied, perhaps, it was because of the heavy rain. So the timing of our arrival was right, it allowed us to truly enjoyed the place and the meal.
What about the food?
No matter how good the setting is, or how famous the star is, if it’s a themed restaurant, the main concerned is still the taste of the food.
Though we came with no expectation, we were surprised to find the food was served in a very presentable manner, a service probably one could only get it in a five-star restaurant/hotel.
The food was served in a gigantic plates and bowl, and its not just the plate is big, the food comes in big portion as well, more than what you needed. We actually ordered more dishes than what we wanted purposely, as we were either intrigued by the name of the dish or just wanted to see how tasty the food is.
The conclusion was this restaurant did not disappoint us, the food was really good, so much better than many themed restaurant which tends to served lousy food.
How could we been in a superstar’s restaurant without a song of his right? The service of the staff was certainly excellent! Beside being attentive, when I requested to delicate a song of Jay Chou’s to my wife, she quickly went to search for it. Soon, the song was being played. I was really touched by her sincerity, thanks to her, we had a memorable 2 hours meal time there.
If you are reading this post, you’re probably a Jay Chou’s fan, and you’ve certainly heard of this song Qing Tian ( 晴天 Sunny Day) many years ago. But I’m not an ardent Jay Chou’s fan, I only learnt about this song recently……and since then my wife and me fall in love with it!
Many drinks and dishes are named after the name of Jay Chou’s song, that create a sense of mystery. For example, a glass of Fruit Tea is named as Listen To Your Mummy. Though bilingual in both Chinese and English , we have to look to the English name for clues.
I am thinking could it be better if pictorial description is added to make it more fun, as the menu is all words.
As you can see from the pictures, the restaurant did not charge an exorbitant price, in fact, taking into consideration that it is a theme restaurant, it’s service and the overall ambience, we find the price is rather reasonable.
Would I come again? Yes, why not, even if I’m not a Jay Chou’ fan.
Address of Jay Chou Restaurant?
Just before leaving the restaurant, we asked the staff how actually we could get to this place? Her verbal direction confused me, not that she did not know the direction, but as a foreigner I find it rather complicated to follow, so it’s better to take a taxi here.
And the address of Jay Chou Restaurant( 周杰伦餐厅 ) is:
The actual name of the restaurant is Mr.J French-Italian Restaurant.
Enjoy your meal!
