The arrival at Niagara Falls caused an uproar, it awaken the sleepy eyes of the whole group. We were queuing to clear the Canada Custom, though separated by the window glass panel, but who cares? Cameras started to fire off seamlessly for almost the 2 hours we were stuck there.
Niagara Falls is the collective name for 3 waterfalls between the border of Ontario, Canada and New York, America. From the largest to the smallest, the 3 falls are Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. The Horseshoe Falls is the one on the Canadian side.
In visiting the Falls, we were given two choices. Which side do we want? None was selected. Our answer was to see all 3 Falls. The guide chose for us, that was how we ended at the Niagara Falls Canada side. He later explained why Niagara Falls best side to view was the Canadan side.
Niagara Falls best side to view- US or Canada?
The problem of the Falls is it’s splited between two countries, that raises the question :Niagara Falls best side to view, USA or Canada? That’s a tough question. Perhaps only Superman knows. Do you know that Superman came here before ? Guess which side he had chosen?
Do not be influenced by Superman, after all that’s just a movie. But, he was partly right …
The small Bridal Veil Falls aside, American Falls and Horseshoe Falls, which is the best? The crowd at Niagara Falls naturally gives the answer away. Firstly, the Canadian side is certainly much crowded, but this could be due to the availability of a huge amusement park which is a major tourist attraction. Secondly, the numbers of hotels on the Canadian side is an obvious indication. According to our guide, both are as good, but to get the full view of all 3 Falls it has to be from the Canada side. For on America side part of the view on Horseshoe Falls is being blocked.
It also depends on your wants or for some, photographer especially, it is a need. One can get close to both Falls, within metres of it. However, it is on the Canadian side that a gorgeous panoramic view of all three Falls can be obtained, that’s good news for photographer. If the intention is to ‘feel & touch’ the Falls, one can easily get close to the brim in any of the Falls. To make things easy, simply view both side, afterall they are just separated by a rubber stamp of an Immigration Custom nearby.
Horseshoe Falls is located on the Canadian side. It was commonly admitted to be the grandest of all. I thought its semi-arc shape played a role in garnering the consensus.
The Horseshoe Falls is the most magnificent of the 3 Falls. One could easily spend hours there admiring the art of God. In broad daylight, the beauty of Niagara Falls has no place to hide. Awesome, gorgeous, magnificent, simply breath-taking! Seeing is believing, at the front of one of the Seven Natural Wonders on earth, a visitor just had to believe Vacation Is Never Enough!
For visitors with limited time it’s best not to be stuck at one site, continue to walk along the walkway, there are so many good photography site along the way, at the other end is the part nearest to the Falls, in this case it’s the Horseshoe Falls. We were there in the early morning of 7am. The serenity of the place make it even better, we need not fight with the crowd.
Be at this close to the Falls and feel the mist getting your body and camera wet in seconds. Couldn’t believe that I was finally at the brim of Niagara Falls Canada side! A dream comes through for me and many others. The Falls is just a metre away, could actually feels its heartbeat and hear the thundering pours! It’s terribly misty due to the Falls, much alike to drizzle, so wear a cap or raincoat if necessary. Be careful of your camera if it’s not water resistant.
The American Falls is on the left, on the right is Bridal Veil Falls.
The attached clip is probably the most comprehensive short video I’ve seen on Niagara Falls, from American Falls to Canadian Falls, it covers almost all angles of views of the Falls from the Canadian side and what one wants to know before arrival. The video is shared by Mr John Wood. Watch it !
The American Falls as seen from the bridge going into Canada. The picture was taken through the tour bus glass panel. Have you ever watched the movie Superman starring Christopher Reeve or Niagara starring Marilyn Monroe ? It was partly filmed here at Niagara Falls.
Niagara Falls Cruise – Maid Of The Mist
A travel to the Niagara Falls is never complete without taking a cruise to get up close to it. The 30 minutes cruise, Maid Of The Mist, gets you within metres from the Falls, here you are, you’re at the foot of the Falls. Everyone is a dwarf at the foot of these gigantic Falls.
Get ready to be soaked, but worry not, for a raincoat is issued to all for free, you may even bring it home as souvenir, it could come in handy if you are continuing your tour to more cities and attractions. Once again, take care of your camera if it’s not water resistant.
Alighting from the cruise is a souvenir shop, so… happy shopping ! Do not miss this ‘last-minute’ shopping, for this is usually the last stop before most tour group leaves Niagara Falls or Ontario, straightaway to explore more on Canada or America. Missed this souvenir shop and you would never get another retailing Niagara Falls related products.
We’re on the way to the much anticipated exciting cruise.
The cruise, Maid Of The Mist, as it was called.
The Falls was so heavy that it looks more like raining and could really get ones soaked, it was also rather windy, so many passengers started playing hide and seek …these are my friends. No one wants to be a hero without the poncho. After a while when the cruise really got close to the Falls most passengers started to take refuge from the deck despite wearing the poncho
It was said that fish actually gone over the Falls and about 90% of them survive despite the strong current. The 1 hour cruise was just right for the Falls. In America and Canada I discovered that all cruises we took lasted for a standard 1 hour, is that a standard or calculated experience?
The landscape by the river bank is just as awesome as the Falls itself, don’t neglect it.
The white foam was formed due to the Falls.
Niagara Falls Helicopter Ride
A visit to Niagara Falls should be completed not just with a cruise, but a helicopter ride as well. It was a unique experience that offers spectacular view of all three Falls – American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls.
Our tour package allows a half day free at the Falls upon arrival, which we and almost the whole group had planned to go for the helicopter ride, however, due to the long immigration clearance in entering Canada, the day was totally wasted. It was a big disappointment when we learned almost immediately from hotel guests that the ride was simply marvelous. Most importantly we think the price is right. One thing we learnt from vacation is if budget permits, never decide going against the thing one wants to buy or see, here you are in a foreign country, probably never to come again together in the next 5-10 years. Regretting for not doing this and that upon home is the worst experience of a holiday.
Do note that in the ride the helicopter would be slanted to about 45 degrees to allow riders to have a better view of the Niagara Falls. Forget about taking good panoramic view of the Falls, it’s not easy in a hovering helicopter, as could be seen from the pictures taken, most were out of focus.
Attached pictures is the ride we had intended to take. The brochure is available in most hotels.
